Sungai Wain Botanical Garden is located in East Kalimantan Province. Background establishment:

1. The decrease of biodiversity due to loss of world forest including in Indonesia as one of the world megadiversity country
2. The decrease of forest cover 0f 2.5 % p.a.
3. Illegal logging of 1.5 mio ha/ year
4. Forest fire: 9 mio ha (1997/ 1998)
5. The decrease of Indonesian forest cover: 143 mio ha in 1997 decreased to 98 mio ha in 2002.

The development concept :

1. Function of botanical garden for research and conservation, education, and recreation
2. Synergy and partnership between related institution such as Public works, LIPI and local government as well as other stakeholders and resource utilization
3. Sustainability: economic, social, ecosystem, and institution

Botanical types developed were multi purpose garden (classical) which integrates habitat, uniqueness, collection integration natural vegetation and proposed theme.

Theme proposed:

1. Timber plant of Kalimantan
2. Flagship species requested is Nepenthes
